Insurance Requirements

Do I need insurance coverage?

YES! Hawaii state law requires all drivers to have a valid motor vehicle insurance policy which satisfies the required State Minimum Liability limits. We cannot rent to drivers without proper insurance.

As of January 2025, Hawaii minimum requirements include the following mandatory coverage:

Your minimum motor vehicle insurance policy must have protection for you and your passengers of $10,000 per person personal injury protection benefits. This is for paying medical and rehabilitative costs.

Your mandatory coverages also include a $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident bodily injury liability and a $10,000 per occurrence property damage liability. These cover damages for the injured party when you are at-fault in an accident.

Hawaii minimum requirements mandate coverage for yourself in case of injury and to other parties (bodily injury liability) and other property (property damage liability) but does not require any minimum coverage for damages to the rented vehicle itself. To ensure our vehicles are protected, an RCP (Renter's Collision Protection) policy is included in your rental price and covers collision damage to our cars only. The amount of coverage depends on your situation, see below.

What is the Insurance Package offered by Maui Roadsters?

The Insurance Package includes:

- Upgraded Renter's Collision Protection Plus (RCP +) policy which covers collision damage to our cars only, up to $35,000 with a deductible of $500.

Renter's State Minimum Liability Protection policy which satisfies Hawaii minimum requirements as stated above. This policy has a $2,500 deductible.

If you do not have proper insurance yourself, this package will provide you with the necessary insurance coverage to rent our Speedsters.

Do I need to purchase the Insurance Package?

- US drivers: Your US personal automobile (not corporate, fleet, business, motorcycle, etc.) insurance is very likely to have coverage which satisfies or exceeds the Hawaii minimum requirements, therefore you should not need to purchase the Insurance Package. If you have any questions about your coverage, please contact your insurance provider prior to booking your Speedster. The Renter's Collision Protection policy included in your rental price covers collision damage to our cars only up to $20,000 with a deductible of $250. Damage to our cars in excess of $20,000, personal injury, third-party liability, etc. must be covered by YOUR personal automobile insurance policy. Please email or text us proof of personal automobile insurance for each driver at least 48 hours prior to your rental. Wallet card, online app screenshot, email or document showing drivers name, policy number and dates policy is valid proof of insurance.

- Canadian drivers (except British Columbia residents): You will need to obtain confirmation from your insurance provider that your personal automobile (not corporate, fleet, business, motorcycle, etc.) insurance policy is valid in the US for the type of vehicle rented (vintage, modified from original production, etc...) and meets Hawaii minimum requirements. From previous experience, most Canadian insurance providers will confirm coverage, therefore you should not need to purchase the Insurance Package, but it needs to be checked and confirmed prior to booking your Speedster. Please contact us at info@mauiroadsters.com or 808-339-6204 so we can send you a detailed email about what is required. Do not send us your insurance policy as we are not insurance experts and aren't in a position to review policies to confirm coverage ourselves.

- Canadian drivers from British Columbia: Unfortunately, ICBC (including Roadstar) does not cover rental vehicles for which the daily rental rate exceeds $250 (USD), therefore excluding our Speedsters. You will need to purchase the Insurance Package when booking your Speedster.

- All other international drivers or drivers who do not have personal automobile insurance: You will need to purchase the Insurance Package when booking your Speedster.

Can I use coverage offered by my credit card?

Credit card companies offer secondary policies that only cover damage to your rental car, not general liability insurance or personal injury, and many types of cars are excluded (vintage cars, older than 10 years, exotic cars, modified vehicles, etc.). Unfortunately, we have not found a credit card that provides the coverage required by Hawaii state law for general liability and personal injury protection.

Are there other options?

Our Insurance Package option was a long time in the making... For many years, we were not able to rent our cars to drivers who did not have US personal auto insurance. It was such a bummer when we had to tell them they were not going to be able to enjoy a Speedster ride on Maui! A few years ago, we were able to list our Speedsters on Turo.com. The internet platform was allowing the drivers to purchase necessary insurance covergage and we finally were able to provide an option to drivers who did not have enough insurance coverage themselves. As Turo.com charges trip fees and additional taxes on top of their pricey insurance package options, the upcost, depending on the level of insurance coverage selected, varied from $200 to $400 per day! As of 2025, we are excited to be able to offer a much more afforbable option!
